Edited by Ivan Van Sertima, this issue of the Journal of African Civilizations brings sustained attention to Black women in the histories and cultures of the ancient African world. Its importance lies in the work of recovering people too often pushed to the margins of conventional accounts of antiquity.

The volume belongs to a larger intellectual tradition that asks readers to examine African history through African-centered scholarship and to recognize the roles Black women held in the development of civilizations.
